Why it matters

Identity infrastructure is reaching the bank-account layer

Westpac NZ says it is the first New Zealand bank accredited to issue digital credentials under the Government's Digital Identity Services Trust Framework. Its planned Westpac Business Bank Account credential lets a business customer select an account, generate a QR code and hold a credential in the Govt.nz app wallet as proof of that account.

Documented workflow

  • Business customer selects an account in Westpac One Business
  • A QR code is generated and scanned into the Govt.nz app wallet
  • The customer confirms the flow with a text-message code
  • A Westpac Business Bank Account credential is issued
  • Westpac says the credential is valid for 72 hours and can be shown as proof of the account

IdentityAccounts category relevance

This model differs from conventional account-data APIs: the bank itself issues a portable credential that represents verified account information. It is therefore tracked under Bank-Issued Account Credentials within the broader Account Ownership Verification category.
